This workshop, designed primarily for prevention specialists, will cover the history, botany, pharmacology, and, referencing the most recent research, the effects upon mind and body of the most commonly abused and misunderstood illegal drug in America. This includes a discussion of the impact of marijuana use upon driving. We also will discuss screenings, assessments and treatments for marijuana problems, in the context of the politicization of medical marijuana, marijuana laws and policy; all with the aspiration of providing sustenance for prevention activities. Objectives: Participants will recognize the unique place of marijuana in the US in terms of its history, botany and pharmacology; understand the effects of marijuana use in the context of a review of the modern science of addiction and the potential for therapeutic use; identify assessment and treatment modalities for marijuana abuse and addiction; and increase their understanding of the controversial issues that make the truth so difficult to construe.

For over twenty years Michael Hague has been involved with teaching, counseling and working with youth/students. He currently is counseling high risk students; coordinating and developing community programs for drug prevention; and presenting trainings on adolescent issues for school districts, community organizations, mental health agencies and colleges (including UNH Continuing Education).
